Being A CPA For Non-Profits or Teaching

While you wont make the big bucks by working for a non-profit or teaching accounting, there is a certain sense of doing good that can come out of it, and a very settled and feel good sort of lifestyle too.

Non-profits always need help and they dont have a lot of money. They need people desperately who can help them balance all of their efforts and especially the money end of it all. Many non-profits will have their own accounting departments and it is also possible to work many places in the world for them. Your task would always be to make every single dollar go as far as possible for them and that can be a very socially rewarding task in itself. If you can find an organization with a cause you truly believe in then you can contribute something worthwhile while also earning a living. Many CPAs will at some point in their careers either do this as something of a break or even volunteer their off time to some thing important to them. Teaching is another option and college positions can offer a nice income and a calm, peaceful lifestyle if you like campus and university life. These options are very varied, of course, and require experience and good credentials so if good grades and higher degrees were a part of your college resume, its a great option. It can be rewarding and it can also give you time to write and to publish if thats your bent. Either of these options - non-profits or teaching - are things you can do before or after working in the corporate world.
